When do dental insurance benefits reset?

Dental insurance benefits operate on a benefit-year cycle. At the start of each new benefit year, the annual maximum resets to its full amount, the deductible resets, and frequency-limited services like cleanings become available again.

Most plans follow the calendar year and reset on January 1. This is why dental practices often see a rush of treatment scheduled in November and December — patients try to use their remaining benefits before they expire, since unused annual maximums almost never roll over.

Some employer-sponsored plans reset on the employer's fiscal year, which might be July 1, October 1, or another anniversary date. Individual and family plans purchased through the marketplace or directly from a carrier often reset on the original enrollment anniversary instead of January 1.

Frequency limits also reset on the benefit year, with one important nuance: many carriers measure preventive frequency from the date of the last service rather than the calendar year. A cleaning labeled 'twice per year' may actually mean 'once every six months from the last cleaning,' which can affect appointment scheduling.

Verification should always capture the plan's effective date, renewal date, and frequency measurement basis. These determine when benefits restore and whether a procedure scheduled near the year-end is timed correctly to take advantage of the upcoming reset.
